SEG September 2016 Enews Update

Time to stop thinking about swimming and start thinking about working….and golfing. The annual Smithers Exploration Group golf tournament on September 16 offers fun on the fairways and lots of socializing. But first, if you know someone in the Burns Lake area who wants to learn basic prospecting, now is the time to sign them up for a UNBC course in mid-September in Burns Lake. Let’s not forget to thank everyone who brought the importance of the minerals industry to the Bulkley Valley Exhibition last week. SEG had more than 300 visitors at our booth, most of them Guessing the Gold.

UNBC Intro to Prospecting Burns Lake September 16 - 18

If you know someone in the Burns Lake area who likes rocks and minerals and the outdoors, UNBC has a program that will interest them. The University of Northern BC will conduct an Introduction to Prospecting course in Burns Lake on Sept 16, 17 & 18. If you or someone you know is interested, call 250-960-5980 to register before this coming Friday Sept 2. The fee is $500.  With GeoScience BC flying airborne geophysical surveys over the region all summer, there is going to be lots of data publicly available for budding prospectors.

Here is some general information about the course:

Prospecting and the prospector are central to the discovery of new mineral occurrences and eventually of mines. Prospectors learn to recognize potential mineral deposits, and conduct basic initial exploration of minerals for bringing to market for potential buyers. This three-day course offers students an introduction to the basics of prospecting for bedrock minerals, and includes a full day in the field learning hands-on methods. You will learn to identify basic rocks and minerals, including ore minerals and how mineral deposits form. This course also covers the basic techniques of prospecting, how to stake a claim online and how to market your discoveries. Introduction to Prospecting is for anyone who enjoys rock-hounding or being outdoors and wants to discover how to recognize mineral showings that might lead to mineral development.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discover geologic time and a brief introduction to geology
  • Identify certain minerals and rocks
  • Navigate maps and map reading
  • Understand basic structures and mountain building
  • Discover mineral deposit formation
  • Discover prospecting techniques
  • Examine mineral tenure
  • Discover how to market a prospect
  • Recognize structures, rock types and mineral showings in the field
  • Examine sample collections: bedrock, soil, stream sediment

Instructor: John De Grace

Price: $500.00

Price Includes: A rock-and-mineral kit

Hats off to SEG booth at Bulkley Valley Exhibition

As usual Smithers Exploration Group welcomed the public to its booth at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition August 25-28. The annual fall fair draws terrific crowds from across the region, and we always get our fair share of visitors. The Guess the Gold contest is the big draw and this year almost 300 people tried their hand at figuring out which shiny rock was gold. Thanks to SEG’s Outreach administrator Lorie Farrell for co-ordinating the booth. If your group wants to know more about the minerals industry and its importance to the north and BC, contact Lorie at her Outreach address.
