We know many of you are busy with the field season, so this is a quick reminder about SEG’s annual golf tournament on September 15;  vital employment opportunities with the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines and an important SEG contract coming soon; plus a look at the young people whose education SEG supported  this year. Above are some students from Morricetown Elementary at Barkerville. If you’re in Smithers in late summer, drop by the SEG booth at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition August 24 – 27.

Employment Opportunities BC Ministry of Energy and Mines

The minerals industry relies on the people who staff the regional Ministry of Energy and Mines offices for everything from timely permit approvals to technical advice on regional geology. The ministry is currently hiring in 4 positions. Two northern Regional Geologists are needed, one for Smithers and one for Prince George. The closing date is July 14.  View the posting details at

Smithers Exploration Group, Northern Cordilleran Collection of Rock Suites

SEG is looking for an experienced geologist with technical and field experience to organize and catalogue its Northern Cordilleran Collection of Rock Suites. The rock suites were collected in the 1970s and are an important resource for the development of expertise on the geology of northern BC and ultimately the discovery of the next mines. The successful applicant will complete the cataloguing of the collection and make recommendations on its completion and how to display the collection. The request for proposal will come out in a week and will include details on the contract. Watch for it.

SEG supports local students; Bursaries, Field Trips and Science Fair

SEG has been active this year in supporting  students throughout the region. We sponsored field trips:

  • Morricetown Elementary School trip to Barkerville
  • Saint Joseph’s School to Jasper
  • Muheim Elementary in Smithers to Driftwood Fossil Beds

We awarded $1000 bursaries to each of two students who are pursuing post-secondary education and have an interest in a career in the minerals industry:

  • Reece Arky at Houston Secondary School in Houston
  • Curtis Ripmeester at Bulkley Valley Christian School in Smithers.

We also awarded Aaliyah Mahboubi SEG’s Earth Science Prize of $100 at this year’s Pacific Northwest science fair.

SEG booth at Bulkley Valley Exhibition, August 24-27

As usual Smithers Exploration Group will welcome the public to its booth at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition August 24-27. The annual fall fair draws terrific crowds from across the region, and we always get our fair share of visitors. The Guess the Gold contest is the big draw and last year almost 300 people tried their hand at figuring out which shiny rock was gold.
