Mining Month Luncheon, Friday May 11, Smithers

Smithers Exploration Group and the Smithers District Chamber of Commerce are again partners in the annual Mining Month luncheon in Smithers on Friday May 11. Since the first Smithers luncheon ten years ago, the two organizations have organized luncheons highlighting the importance of the Smithers business community to the minerals industry and the benefits the industry brings to the community.

This year’s luncheon continues that theme: Growing Mining, Growing Smithers - a panel discussion about why Smithers has become a prime location for organizations that service the minerals industry provincially, nationally and internationally.

  • Date:  Friday May 11, 2018
  • Time: 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
  • Location: Prestige Hudson Bay Lodge, Ferguson Room, Smithers
  • Price: $25

To purchase tickets, please contact the Smithers Chamber of Commerce at 250-847-5072 or e-mail info@smitherschamber.com  on sale now.

SEG Rock Room Administrator

Smithers Exploration Group is hiring a part time administrator to operate and promote its Rock Room Collection of Cordilleran Rock Suites. In mid-May SEG will post a request for expressions of interest in the position, so watch for it.

The successful candidate will be a Smithers-based geologist, preferably with experience in the rocks of northern BC, who will ensure the SEG Rock Room is used a resource for mineral development in northern BC. The collection will be used by geologists and prospectors who need to familiarize themselves with the geology of northern BC, by trainers who are educating the next generation of explorationists in northern BC and by school students interested in rocks.

Thanks Houston

SEG was pleased to see everyone at Minerals North just down the road in Houston. It was a full house and Houston did itself proud. SEG drew hundreds of school kids to our Minerals Rock at the Legion, and thanks to Lorie Farrell and Judi L’Orsa for putting that together.

SEG’s booth at the trade show attracted lots of attention with a draw to Name the Town Where This Rock is From. We already know that rock is from the SEG Rock Room Collection of Cordilleran Rock Suites but its first home was near Smithers on the Davidson deposit.

Minerals North 2018 will be in Chetwynd.

Mine Supervisor Certification, June 1

The Mines Act states that every person employed at a mine must be under the daily supervision of a person who holds a valid and appropriate certificate as required by the regulations or the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia (Code).

The Mine Supervisor’s Certification is intended to ensure a common understanding of the Code, to encourage worker safety and to ensure supervisors on a mine site are aware of their responsibilities under the Code. This requirement comes into force on June 1, 2018.

The provision requires that anyone supervising six or fewer people on an active mine operation or in other areas of a mine, such as a mill, tailings storage facility, lab or maintenance area or shop, must complete their Supervisor’s Certification. It applies to all mine sites in the province including major mines, exploration sites, sand and gravel and placer operations and quarries.

This certification is now available through the following link Mine Supervisor Certification. The cost for the Mine Supervisor Certification is $100 and must be renewed every five years.
