Brown Bag lunches

For the past couple of years SEG has been co-ordinating what we call Brown Bag Lunches with various provincial ministries, as part of our Outreach program sponsored by the Association for Mineral Exploration BC.  Several times a year SEG members and staff from ministries such as Energy and Mines and Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations meet for off-the-record information exchanges about issues important to the minerals industry in the north. That's a Brown Bag lunch you're seeing in the photo above.

If you want to be notified of upcoming Brown Bag lunches, drop SEG Outreach co-ordinator Lorie Farrell a note at outreachsmithersexplorationgr@gmail.com

Minerals South November 5 and 6

The Chamber of Mines of Eastern BC will be hosting this year’s Minerals South Conference at the Prestige Hotel in Nelson this coming week November 5 and 6 with a short course/workshop on November 4th and a field trip on the 7th. The conference is shaping up to be a great one once again and is certainly a conference that should plan on attending if you are working or have any work interests in the Kootenays.

NWCC School of Exploration & Mining Celebrates 10 Years

Northwest Community College School of Exploration & Mining (NWCC SEM) hosted a 10th anniversary event on October 30 to celebrate its decade milestone and recognize the industry and community partners for their contribution to this achievement. Smithers Exploration Group is a founding partner in the school and was thrilled to take part in the celebrations. The School was pleased that two of the industry’s leaders were able to attend.

“AME BC congratulates the Northwest Community College’s School of Exploration & Mining on its 10th anniversary. As an educational leader, the School of Exploration & Mining is investing in the future and serving as an important bridge between industry and communities in British Columbia,” says Gavin C. Dirom, President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). “In partnership with government, First Nations communities, industry, and educational institutions, the School of Exploration & Mining is producing job-ready graduates with transferable skills. The school’s 72% job-placement rate is evidence that their graduates are ready to help fill the nearly 4,000 positions expected to open in mineral exploration and development in BC over the next years 10 years due primarily to retiring employees.”

"With more than $30 billion in potential projects currently at vary stages of the environmental assessment and permitting process, we expect the demand of skilled labour in BC to continue to grow in the decades ahead," added Karina Briño, President and CEO of the Mining Association of BC . "NWCC SEM's unique model ensures that its graduates are both job-ready and environmentally conscious, helping ensure young British Columbians are first in line for the jobs of tomorrow."

Roundup 2015 January 26 - 29 Booths 1624 1626 SEG booth volunteers needed

Mineral Exploration Roundup 2015 will be in its new venue next year in the Vancouver Convention Centre East, under the sails of Canada Place January 26 – 29, 2015.  SEG will have its booth at Roundup on Monday January 26 and Tuesday January 27. Of course we’ll be in a new location at the convention centre – no longer at the entrance to the trade show.  Look for the high viz vest on the buggy whip and you’ll find our new location at booths 1624 and 1626.

Norma Jean Adzich has enthusiastically taken on the job of chair to co-ordinate the SEG booth. She’s already getting the booth crew lined up. If you’re going to be at Roundup, drop her a line and volunteer to help staff the booth -  normajean.adzich@gmail.com;  250-847-4657, 778-210-0669

We also want to thank Bandstra for its usual support in getting the SEG booth materials down to Roundup. Their kind of local support make undertakings like Roundup possible.
